60th Anniversary of the Universary Declaration of Human Rights

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights has to be one of the most visionary documents of our time. This legendary document outlined a united vision to build a world in which every human being lives in dignity- a world founded on freedom, justice and peace.

Whilst impressive advances have been made in the field of human rights over the past decades the promises of human rights are still to be realized for billions of people around the world living in poverty who are struggling daily for their survival.

The Torch of Struggle – is the theme chosen by the Nairobi People's Settlement Network for our joint Human Rights Day celebrations in 2005 and is the underlying theme that is running through all of Dignity’s programmes to this day as we celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the UDHR. Over the years the “Torch of Struggle” has travelled through 4 continents showing unity in Dignity’s activities and active solidarity across national borders among struggling communities with whom we work.

This year on 10 December 2008, Dignity International and its partners around the world will join hands with millions of others to celebrate this important day and pledge our commitment to the goals and principles of the UDHR. 10th of December 2008 will also mark the start of the International Year for Human Rights Learning.
