There are many governments that can support human rights/development work. Some of these governments have a range of priority countries and priority areas that they support. Generally these governments channel their funding through international NGOs based in their own countries. However it is sometimes possible to receive support from them.
Here are the basic steps you need to take: 1. Find out which of these donor governments have embassies in your country/or location of your project. 2. Find out who is responsible for “development cooperation” in that embassy; if the embassy has a special budget to support local projects; and the procedure for application. 3. Follow-up on step 2. AUSTRALIA: Australian Government AUSTRIA: Federal Ministry for Foreign Affairs You will find facts & figures on the country, a presentation of its political system, all about the Austrian foreign policy and Development Co-operation. BELGIUM: Belgian Federal Government The official Web Site of the Belgian Federal government with detailed background information on Belgium, its people, its systems and its culture with links to government ministries, the monarchy and European organisations (in Dutch, French, German and English). CANADA: Government of Canada Official Website Information and service gateways for Canadians, businesses and non-Canadians with a link to the Prime Minister's Office, government agencies and departments and government contacts. CIDA: Canadian International Development Agency CIDA supports sustainable development activities in order to reduce poverty and to contribute to a more secure, equitable and prosperous world. Working with partners in the private and public sectors in Canada and in developing countries, and with international organizations and agencies, CIDA supports foreign aid projects in more than 100 of the poorest countries of the world. CZECH REPUBLIC: Czech Republic Government Office of the Czech Republic Government - Portal to the government of the Czech Republic with links to members, committees, councils and commissions, press department, and decisions. DENMARK: Royal Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs This Web Site provides you with information about the Danish foreign and development policies. Direct access to the Danish Trade Council and Invest in Denmark (in Danish, English, French, German and Spanish). EUROPEAN UNION: European Union online Europa is the portal site of the European Union. It provides up-to-date coverage of European Union affairs and essential information on European integration. Users can also consult all legislation currently in force or under discussion, access the Web sites of each of the EU institutions and find out about the policies administered by the European Union under the powers devolved to it by the Treaties (in English, French, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, German, Greek, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish and Swedish). FINLAND: Ministry of Foreign Affairs FRANCE: Ministry of Foreign Affairs A comprehensive site with sections on news, foreign policy, France in Europe, the French abroad, international co-operation, tourist advice and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs itself (in French, English, German and Spanish). GERMANY: Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ministry of Foreign Affairs webpage, with information on Germany, current events, tourist advice, foreign policy and European policy (in German, English and French). GREECE: Ministry of Foreign Affairs Information about Greece, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs itself, Greek foreign policy and consular services, as well as business and economy (in Greek and English). HUNGARY: Ministry of Foreign Affairs Overview of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs with sections on current issues, consular services, spokesman's statements, international co-operation and Hungarian history and culture (in Hungarian and English). ICELAND: Official Site of the Icelandic Foreign Service Wealth of information about Iceland and Icelandic nature, its history and people, culture and science, travel and leisure, business in Iceland, its economy and foreign policy as well as links on numerous related subjects (in English). IRELAND: Irish Government A comprehensive site with general information on Ireland and links to government organisations (in English and Gaelic). ITALY: Ministry of Foreign Affairs Foreign policy, opportunities, documentation and current affairs of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (in Italian and English). JAPAN: Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs The official Web Site of the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs with news and announcements, foreign policy, and economic and regional affairs, as well as related links (in English and Japanese). KOREA: Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade A helpful site with general information about Korea, visa procedures, Korean trade and economy, foreign policy and relations with links to special events and tourist Web sites (in Korean and English). LUXEMBOURG: Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade, Co-operation and Defence Lots of information on foreign and European policy, trade, co-operation and humanitarian action as well as defence (in French, section 'Travel, Visas & Passports' available in Spanish and soon in English). MEXICO: Government of Mexico A very comprehensive site, a portal to all government ministries and to a number of non-government sites (in Spanish only). NETHERLANDS: Ministry of Foreign Affairs This site provides information on the Netherlands, Dutch foreign policy, embassies and consulates and current foreign affairs (in Dutch, German, French, Spanish, Italian and Russian). NEW-ZEALAND: Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade The New Zealand Ministry for Foreign Affairs and Trade Web Site provides information about New Zealand's international relations. NORWAY: Norwegian Government Information on the Norwegian government, news, business and tourism with links to ministries (in English, Norwegian, Swedish, Danish and Icelandic). POLAND: Ministry of Foreign Affairs This site provides a basic overview of Poland, Polish foreign policy, Poland's involvement in the EU and NATO, consular information, current events (in Polish and English). PORTUGAL: The Portuguese Government Web Portal It is the new official site of the Portuguese Government. The portal includes information about the government cabinet, political program, activities, organisation, previous government cabinets, a search engine and links to all government departments and public services (in Portuguese and English). SLOVAKIA: Slovakian Government Detailed Web site of the Slovakian government with links to the Prime Minister's Office and government communiques (in Slovak and English). SPAIN: Ministry of Foreign Affairs (in Spanish only) SWEDEN: Swedish Government A very comprehensive site of the Swedish government with information on press releases, legislation, government agencies and ministries (in multiple languages). SWITZERLAND: Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (in English, French, Italian and German). TURKEY: Ministry of Foreign Affairs Informative Web Site of the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs with information on current events, foreign policy, consular services, diplomatic archives with regional links (Turkey and the EU, Cyprus and the Middle East) and other helpful tourist links (in Turkish and English). UNITED KINGDOM: Foreign and Commonwealth Office The Web site of the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO), the British Government department responsible for overseas relations and foreign affairs.
